Microcement FAQ

The questions we're asked most — on how microcement performs, where it goes, and how it's cared for. Straight, honest answers.

Is microcement waterproof?

Microcement is water-resistant, not waterproof. It's a thin mineral surface that, once sealed with a polyurethane sealer, resists everyday water and splashes. In wet areas like bathrooms and around pools, the microcement is applied over waterproofing that is installed to Australian Standards — the waterproofing does the sealing, the microcement is the finish over it.

Can microcement go over existing tiles?

Yes. Microcement is applied at just 2–3 mm and bonds over existing tiles, concrete, render and many other sound substrates, so most projects are resurfaced without demolition. The tiles are prepared and primed first, and a reinforcing mesh is used to bridge grout lines and movement.

How thick is microcement?

The finished microcement system is only about 2–3 mm thick, built up from a primer, a reinforcing mesh, base coats, fine coats and sealer. That thinness is why it can go over existing surfaces without changing floor heights or trimming doors.

How long does microcement last?

A properly prepared and maintained microcement surface lasts many years — commonly quoted as 10–20+ years with periodic resealing. Longevity depends on substrate preparation, the sealer, and resealing roughly every 2–3 years for wet or high-traffic areas.

Does microcement crack?

Microcement itself is a thin, flexible mineral coating, and the base system is designed with anti-crack layers and a reinforcing mesh to bridge minor substrate movement. Correct substrate preparation is essential — cracks in the finish almost always trace back to an unstable or poorly prepared substrate rather than the material.

Is microcement stain and scratch resistant?

Sealed microcement is stain- and scratch-resistant for everyday use — it relies on the polyurethane sealer for that protection. It is not resistant to bleach, strong acids or harsh abrasives, and spills should be wiped up promptly. Reseal every 2–3 years to keep the protection fresh.

How do you maintain microcement?

Day to day, clean with a pH-neutral cleaner and a soft cloth or mop — no harsh chemicals or abrasive pads. Reseal roughly every 2–3 years (sooner in busy wet areas) to maintain water and stain resistance. Wipe spills promptly, especially anything acidic.

Where can microcement be used?

Almost anywhere: bathrooms, kitchens and benchtops, floors, walls and feature walls, stairs, commercial and retail interiors, and outdoors on courtyards, terraces and pool surrounds. Different systems suit different demands — walls, floors, wet areas and exteriors each have a matched system.

What colours does microcement come in?

Our microcement is available in a range of 29 standard colours, plus custom colour matching on request. Because it's hand-trowelled, each surface carries subtle tonal variation and marbling that changes with the light.

How much does microcement cost?

Pricing depends on the surface, area, substrate and finish, so we quote every job individually — build your surface in the configurator or request a quote and we'll confirm an itemised price. There's no payment online; the basket sends an enquiry we quote by email.
